Art Institute and Gallery

Peruse an array of exhibits at the Art Institute and Gallery, located in Salisbury's pedestrian-friendly downtown area where history blends with dining, shopping and culture. Chipman Cultural Center
Visit the Delmarva Peninsula's first African American school and church, built in 1838, and enjoy the variety of educational displays and cultural events that highlight the area's rich African American Heritage. 410-860-9290 - 321 Broad St, Salisbury

The Mason Dixon Marker
The famous Mason-Dixon Line, set in 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon of the British Royal Observatory, lies within the borders of Wicomico County. The line, which came to symbolize the entire border between slave and free states, is designated with stone markers in the tiny town of Mardela Springs, Maryland. 410-548-4914 - Rt. 54, Mardela Springs

Barren Creek
The town of Barren Creek in historic Mardela Springs features a number of sites of interest including Barren Creek Springs Presbyterian Church. The church, which doubled as a schoolhouse for several years, was built in 1842 and is open year-round for tours. Located just yards away is the original Barren Creek Springs House which was once a hotel frequented by visitors from Baltimore, Washington and across the mid-Atlantic region who wished to experience the town's mineral water spa. Additionally, a Barren Creek Heritage Museum is operated at 413 Main Street and boasts 30 permanent exhibits which tell the story of settlement and growth on Wicomico's westside. The museum is open from April through mid-October from 10 AM until 2 PM. Guided tours of the museum and town are available upon request.

Adkins Historical and Museum Complex
Located near the Mason Dixon Marker, Adkins Historical and Museum Complex offers visitors a tour of eight historic buildings and the gravestones of a Revolutionary War patriot and his wife. The furnished buildings include a village store, a town lodge, a livery stable, a one room schoolhouse, a farmhouse (1724), two sheds and a warehouse. 410-677-4740 - 106 Brattan St., Mardela Springs

Historic District of Newtown
Take a stroll through the Historic District of Newtown, a town built after much of Salisbury was ravaged by fire in 1860 and again in 1886. There you'll find restored Grand Victorian homes, including the 1800's Poplar Hill Mansion, an a historic "Federal Style" manor house that now operates as a museum. 410-749-1776 - Salisbury

Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art
Enjoy world champion decorative carvings and acclaimed contemporary sculpture and paintings in one of Wicomico County's treasured museums. Nestled next to Shumaker Pond and surrounded by wildlife in the heart of the Atlantic Flyway, the museum features the world's largest and finest public collection of decorative and antique decoys. 410-742-4988 - 909 S. Salisbury Zoo
Set along the beautiful Wicomico River, the Salisbury Zoological Park is one of the finest zoos of its kind in the eastern United States. The 13-acre facility features almost 400 specimens native to the Americas, including bears, tropical and local birds, bison, white-tail deer, llama, jaguar, river otters and an alligator. The Zoo charges no admission fee to visitors, but does appreciate the donations of those who wish to support this wonderful attraction. 410-548-3188 - 755 South Park Drive, Salisbury

Upper Ferry and Whitehaven Ferry
Explore the waterways uniquely by crossing the Wicomico River on the two-car Upper Ferry or the three-car Whitehaven Ferry which has been in operation for more than 300 years. It's said that Whitehaven Village is where Edna Ferber, inspired by the stories of the salesmen who traveled the Wicomico River, wrote "Show Boat." 410-543-2765 - Whitehaven, MD

The Delmarva Shorebirds
Formed in April of 1996, the Delmarva Shorebirds, now a Class-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, make their home at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Perdue Stadium, with a seating capacity of 5,200, features a carousel and playground, speed-pitch machine, a cafe area directly behind home plate, a large picnic deck down the right field line and plenty of concession stands offering traditional ballpark favorites such as hot dogs, peanuts and popcorn. An added bonus is the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame. Located on the stadium's ground floor, the museum houses artifacts and memorabilia chronicling the history of local baseball from 1926-1947. 410-219-3112 - Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, Salisbury.

Pemberton Hall
Take a trip back to the 17th century by touring Pemberton Hall. Erected in 1741 as a home for plantation owner Isaac Handy, the hall is the centerpiece of the more than 200 acre historical park. The hall is open for tours every Sunday afternoon from May until September from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Explore the natural habitat that surrounds the home anytime between dawn and dusk. Interpretive signage is in place to and offers glimpse into colonial life on the Eastern Shore.
